Historical discontinuities in social change make generations appear to be a sociologically relevant phenomenon. However, the demographic concept of generation also has important sociological implications, as living in an ageing society makes a difference to young people, for example, welfare resources may be allocated more readily to retirement funds than to education and training. In historical perspective, generations depend on events and conditions that mark the formative years of life before the entry into adulthood. Thus, a kind of generational collective memory is formed through the cognitive and emotional processing of key events experienced by individuals. In addition, accelerating social changes increase the distance between generations, both within the family and in educational institutions. In recent times, the dangers produced by COVID-19, the outbreak of war in Ukraine and climate emergencies have had different impacts on younger and older generations, and open opportunities for the development of new social movements with different perspectives towards the future.
