In the past couple of decades, the continuous explosion of tourism studies in terms of scale, scope, subject matter, theoretical and methodological advances, etc., has been matched by an explosion in landscape studies, leading to an infiltration of landscape into various types of tourism analysis and vice versa. Contemporary approaches to this interdisciplinary area of study turn to the examination of variable aspects of interplay between culture and tourism, corporeality/materiality, consumption, identity, natural and cultural heritage and sustainability, in close connection to landscape. Furthermore, methodological approaches from both of these fields, e.g., landscape character assessment, are increasingly applied to landscapes of tourism research and analysis. Landscapes of tourism are studied as human-environment interfaces reflecting and staging recreational trends, multifunctional livelihood systems, conflicts and opportunities for employment and income generation, as well as human, cultural, and natural resource management and use. This chapter aims to explore recent and state-of-the-art inroads and advances at the interface of the interdisciplinary scientific fields of tourism and landscape, while highlighting the range and significance of their interlinkages, in terms of theory, empirical practice, approach, policy, ethics, and future prospects.
