This chapter examines the creation of the Workplace Relations Commission (WRC) out of a radical merger of four existing conflict resolution agencies. Beyond the creation of the Labour Court in 1956, this was the most radical reform of workplace conflict resolution in the history of the state. The governance, operation and management of the WRC are described as well as the early challenges and controversies confronted by the new agency. The serious challenges to the operation of the WRC arising from the ‘Zelewski judgement’ by the Irish Supreme Court judgement are considered. Changing patterns of service demand and delivery within the WRC are outlined.
