This chapter aruges for the importance of understanding and studying management. It starts by defining management. Management refers to the social and operational process of bringing people and other resources together in order to achieve results. Moreover, a manager's decisions, behaviours, and attitudes have impacts at the level of the individual, the organization, as well as wider society. The chapter highlights the complexity of studying management as it is not a simple ‘how-to’ learning experience but rather it requires introspection on being effective. It then looks into the emergence of management as a practice and discipline of study before enumerating the functions and processes of management.
