In thi chapter we explore how the spread of English to postcolonial settings has led to the development of new varieties of World Englishes (WE). We outline models for understanding these developments and present examples of the features of WE. WE research illustrates how the systematic use of such features gives rise to new language varieties which differ from Anglophone ‘standard’ English, and other varieties of WE. We discuss the contributions, controversies, and limitations of WE research. Readers will consider the legitimacy of WE varieties and what WE research tells us about the relationship between language, identity, and culture.
