Raw Materials for the Glass Industries of Venice and the Terraferma, about 1370–about 1460

Abstract

THE evolution of the Venetian glass indus try has been determined since the 13th cen tury by economic processes, technological advances, and governmental interferences, the pur pose of which was to further the growth of the industry and to shield it from foreign competition. The combination of these factors is illustrated by two unpublished documents that have been over looked by historians of glassmaking in Venice and the neighboring mainland or Terraferma. 1 One of them may be safely ascribed to 1394, while the other is dated January 5, 1408. 2
