Abstract Developmental neuropsychological testing is an important component of the developmental neuropsychiatric examination. This chapter provides an orientation to using developmental neuropsychological testing in assessing mental functioning. It discusses a neuropsychological model of functional domains, proceeding from domain-general to domain-specific interactive specialization; introduces the construct of neuroconstructionism; reviews current issues in the application of tests and instrument development; provides a comparison of neuropsychological and clinical psychological approaches to assessment; considers the differences in brain–behavior relationships between adults and children on neuropsychological testing; reviews indications for neuropsychological testing; discusses assessment strategies for the neuropsychological capacities tested; and provides a description of the types of tests used and a rationale for their use.
