The Persian campaigns of Heraclius in the 620s rank very high in the annals of war. The East Roman Empire was facing annihilation when the emperor decided to take the war to the enemy and struck deep into the north-west provinces of the Sasanian empire in 624. His victories in the field over the following few years and their political repercussions (which led to the fall of his Persian antagonist, Khusrau II) saved the main bastion of Christianity in the Near East and gravely weakened its old Zoroastrian rival. They may be shadowed by the even more extraordinary military achievements of the Arabs in the following two decades, but hindsight should not be allowed to dim their lustre.
