Abstract Chapter 2 provides an accessible yet rigorous introduction to relevant neuroscience research on cognitive aging. Decades of research persuasively demonstrates that the brain’s physical structures and efficiencies change over time, leading to marked and measurable cognitive declines. These declines emerge as early as one’s mid-20s and tend to progress in a steady manner throughout the aging process. The chapter discusses several different cognitive domains (e.g., memory, processing speed, and executive function), examines various parts of the brain (e.g., the frontal lobe), and summarizes how the brain changes with age. In particular, the chapter emphasizes how processing speed and executive functioning decline significantly as humans age.
