As companies around the world are increasingly required to demonstrate positive environmental and social performance and good governance (ESG), engineers are poised to contribute widely their knowledge, skills and leadership across different industry sectors. In this study, we examined survey data from 982 engineering graduates across Canada to understand the extent to which engineers are integrating dimensions of environmental sustainability and equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) into professional work. While we saw some evidence of consistent integration of environmental sustainability, we saw in smaller proportion integration of EDI and social justice concerns. Respondents doing ESG-integrated work also, in greater proportions, agreed that leadership and societal impact knowledge and skills contributed to their careers, as compared with others. The paper ends with a discussion on limitations and implications for engineering education.
