This study empirically examines factors influencing public preferences for document preservation, focusing on books and websites in a nation’s cultural heritage. Using a choice-based experimental design, respondents selected preferences, revealing that while books are generally valued for preservation, doubts about content reliability or frequency of use may diminish their cultural heritage significance. Conversely, websites gain preservation worthiness through third-party checks or frequent use. Media type alone does not determine preservation preference. The results highlight challenges in determining legal deposit eligibility based solely on media type, emphasizing the need for a nuanced approach to safeguarding cultural heritage.
