The most important of the allegations against Burt have now been considered: the historical falsifications, which were the most extensive; and the twin frauds, which were the most spectacular. There remain two further matters which have been widely regarded as confirming Burt’s dishonesty. The first concerns a paper entitled ‘Intelligence and social mobility’ ( Burt 1961b ) which appeared in the British Journal of Statistical Psychology. This dealt with the controversial question of the relation between intelligence and occupational class, and whether any such relation was more plausibly attributed to heredity or environment. The second concerns a paper entitled ‘Intelligence and heredity: some common misconceptions’ ( Burt 1969c ) which appeared in the Irish Journal of Education. This dealt, among other things, with the almost equally controversial matter of whether there had been changes in educational standards over the previous half-century, and how any such changes were to be explained.
