We set out to discover the origins of the general tendency of modern psychology to ignore the layman’s understanding. Our search began with the traditional psychology of mental life, which attempted, in however limited a way, to do justice to this feature of human nature. We then traced the increasing dissatisfaction with this conception, as it was found to conflict with the methods and concepts of the natural sciences. The dissatisfaction reached its climax in the behaviourist movement, which finally ejected the concept of mind, and thus marked a profound alteration in the centre of gravity of psychology. Before Watson, psychology was centred on the human mind; after Watson, it became centred on animal behaviour. The layman’s understanding was now lost to view.
