Elizabethan Comic Character Conventions explores the conventional techniques used in the creation and portrayal of comic characters in Elizabethan drama, focusing on the works of George Chapman. Expanding on his doctoral dissertation at the University of Michigan, Paul V. Kreider examines the accepted theatrical conventions and their application in Chapman's comedies. He delves into the direct identification and characterization of characters, the management of disguised characters, and the use and modification of traditional comic stereotypes. In addition, he considers Chapman's employment of Elizabethan psychology and his contributions to the comedy of humours. This book provides insights into Chapman's life, his literary activities, and the broader context of sixteenth-century dramatic composition.
