In comparison with those of the preceding Visigothic period, the churches of the Asturian kingdom appear to be historically well documented. Although half a dozen well-preserved churches are generally believed to date from the seventh century, of only one of them, San Juan de Baños near Palencia, can this be said with something approaching absolute confidence. This is thanks to the existence in situ of the inscription recording the dedication to St. John the Baptist by the Visigothic king Reccesuinth and the year this was done. The inscription seems to be both original and intrinsic to the building, so the royal foundation and the date of 661 are virtually secure. 1 This makes this particular church the only fixed point in an otherwise fluid area of study.
