The present prospective study sought to examine amor fati as a predictor of psychological well-being (Time 3), and to determine if optimism and pessimism (Time 2) sufficiently accounted for any prospective association identified between amor fati and dimensions of psychological well-being. Results of testing for mediation indicated that in predicting 5 out of the 6 dimensions of psychological well-being, optimism had indirect effects on all 5 dimensions of psychological well-being and pessimism had indirect effects on only 2 dimensions of psychological well-being. Evidence for complete mediation involving optimism and pessimism was only found in accounting for the association between amor fati and personal growth. In contrast, amor fati continued to have a direct effect on the remaining four dimensions of psychological well-being. Taken together, these findings indicate that although optimism and pessimism contribute to predicting psychological well-being, amor fati remains an important temporal determinant of psychological well-being in adults.
