This article employs social constructionist and narrative hermeneutic frameworks to examine The Apprentice (i.e. a 2024 biographical drama directed by Ali Abbasi) as a cultural lens through which Donald Trump’s constructed characters reflect broader societal tensions and divisions in American society. Shaped by the principles of his mentor, Roy Cohn – never admit fault, always attack, and treat every interaction as zero-sum – Trump’s public identity is analyzed for its resonance within a polarized landscape. Rather than critiquing media influence or political affiliation discourse, these authors explore how The Apprentice mirrors and reinforces existing social hierarchies, deepening our understanding of Trump’s appeal among specific demographics. Drawing on our diverse backgrounds as Iranian-American, Brazilian-American, and British-American authors, we examine how The Apprentice embodies themes of identity, power, and privilege, which resonate with segments of society that feel alienated by contemporary social changes. Through a narrative hermeneutic lens (Freeman & Meretoja, 2023), this analysis considers how such characters highlight ideological divides and reflect a society increasingly polarized along lines of identity, power, and belonging.
