Recent studies suggest that city-regionalism is mixed with, and overlaps with, geo-economic, political-administrative and geopolitical dimensions. However, these studies tend to focus on the complex, multi-layered and intertwined formation processes of city-regionalism from a single perspective. Therefore, I followed an economisation approach to allow for a holistic yet nuanced examination of the four phases of city-regionalism in China: regional production complexes from 1949 to 1978; economic regions from 1978 to 1992; global city-regions from 1992 to the mid-2000s; and multi-city-regionalism since the mid-2000s. City regionalism has become an integral part of the dynamic processes of economisation shaped by the interplay between the state, geopolitics and business.
