Morocco, a multilingual postcolonial country whose peoples use a mix of Darija (Moroccan Arabic), standard Arabic, Amazigh varieties, French, English, and Spanish, is slowly establishing itself as a key economic player in Africa. Morocco’s economy depends on agriculture and fishing and other natural resources. Since 2016 many primarily top-down campaigns have been created to bring public awareness of pollution caused by plastic consumption. This article analyses the languages used and their effectiveness in two important plastic awareness campaigns, called ‘Zéro Mika’ [‘Zero Plastic’] and ‘B7arblaplastic’ [‘Beach without Plastic’]. This study shows how a judicious use of languages in public messaging can amplify the message and better reach multilingual, ethnically diverse communities in Morocco.
