Rethinking Urban Development in Sub-Saharan Africa: The Impact and Challenges of Informal Development on Urban Form in Kano, Nigeria

Abstract

Informal development seriously affects the urban form in the form of overstretched infrastructure, poor drainage, poor waste disposal, blackspots, overpopulation, social vices, cultural differences, inequality, and poor health facilities, which transcends to impacting individual lives and environment. Survey research design was adopted in this research, and questionnaires were used to elicit data from four zones selected within the study area using a stratified sampling technique. It examines the impact and challenges posed by the informal development of urban form as a serious issue that requires prompt responses from all stakeholders. Therefore, this paper suggests implementing an integration strategy to improve the urban of the development Badawa Agangara area through situation assessment, stakeholder engagement, integration planning, economic recovery, and preservation of heritage and identity. Development authorities should intervene in averting the informal development of Badawa to salvage its form and prevent further decay.
