Unstoppable Implementation. Technological Imaginaries on Artificial Intelligence in Southern European Journalism

Abstract

This study explores the technological imaginaries and discourse surrounding the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) in journalism within Southern European media. The advent of generative AI, such as ChatGPT, has initiated significant shifts in journalistic practices, demanding a redefinition of traditional roles and competencies. By analysing 16159 articles across multiple Southern European languages using natural language processing and network analysis, this research identifies prevalent narratives and community structures within the media discourse. The findings highlight a dual perspective: while AI is viewed as a transformative tool enhancing efficiency and productivity, there are pervasive concerns about ethical implications, misinformation, and the preservation of journalistic values. The study underscores the importance of editorial oversight, media literacy, and regulatory frameworks to mitigate AI&s;s potential risks. Furthermore, it discusses the cultural and contextual challenges of adopting AI technologies developed primarily in non-Southern European contexts. Despite its critical position, the conveyed technological discourse involves accepting this foreign technology rather than scrutinising its introduction. This vision underscores its adaptive potential, emphasising its capabilities and promoting technological literacy. This research contributes to understanding how technological advancements are narrated and perceived in regional media, providing insights into the balance between innovation and ethical journalism.
