This study aimed to understand how Japanese apparel designers’ apparel design processes are impacted by their use of traditional Japanese textiles. With the discontinuance of kimono as daily wear, these culturally important textiles used to make them face extinction. A multiple case study approach was used. Findings may guide additional designers’ efforts to preserve culturally important textile crafts by using them in contemporary products. The inquiry was structured around the fashion design process steps: (1) Research, (2) Concept Development, (3) Design of the Collection, (4) Prototype Development, (5) Finalization of the Collection, and (6) Approval. The choice to use a traditional textile meant that all Research sub-steps were directed by the characteristics of the selected textiles. Further, traditional textiles guided every subsequent step in the fashion design process. The changes in the order and focus of these steps from the typical fashion design process caused challenges, which were overcome through the designers’ creativity, passion, and commitment to the continued use and preservation of traditional Japanese textiles.
