With this study, we contribute to the small but growing body of empirical research in the emerging field of narrative criminology and victimology by analyzing the life narratives of six survivors of maritime piracy attacks in the Gulf of Guinea and off Somalia. Our objectives are twofold. First, we seek to gain a better understanding of the lasting and life-changing impact of piracy victimization, and second, we explore survivors’ attempts to rebuild their lives and rediscover meaning after such transformative experiences. By giving voice to the victims of piracy, we also help refocus the field of piracy studies from the economic and trade-related consequences of piracy to its human toll. Our study thus has value added for both the novel domain of narrative victimology and for piracy studies. It also has implications for the support and care of victims of piracy and other severe forms of crime.
