Abstract This Introduction offers an account of some of the historical and theoretical aspects of the early history of the journal Mind. As such, it serves as background and context for the chapters in the volume. It starts with a description of the editorial policies behind the journal, and then chronicles the development of its contents under the first two editors, Croom Robertson and Stout, in terms of the changing relationship between philosophy and psychology in its pages. It concludes by introducing the thematic structure of the volume and offering brief chapter summaries.
