The paper examines the rich history of batik techniques, tracing their origins back to 5000 B.C. and focusing on their evolution in Indonesia from the 5th to the 18th centuries. It highlights how batik evolved in different cultures independent of each other because of trade links including in the colonial period when it arrived in Europe. This interaction adapted batik, and new regional styles were developed, including in Africa. The study observes that batik motifs shifted from Hindu Buddhist to Islamic influences that followed dynamic changes in Indonesian society. In addition, they also described Indonesia’s batik, which UNESCO acknowledged as an intangible cultural heritage, and the power of batik in social empowerment and economic sustainability. It also compares conventional batik techniques with modern digital processes, including hand-drawn (batik tulis) and block-printed (batik cap) means. Ultimately, it underscores batik’s enduring cultural relevance as an essential medium of artistic expression that links local customs to a larger global framework.
