Abstract As the use of storytelling and doll play approaches one hundred years in psychological research and clinical practice, this volume showcases narrative story completion methodologies (NSCM), a versatile research approach that uses story stems, dolls, and other visual methods to uncover our inner worlds, reveal social discourses, and communicate complex or difficult topics, and that is often hailed as the gold standard for assessing internal representations in attachment research. This volume offers an in-depth exploration of three decades of narrative story completion work, presenting innovative NSCM applications and research questions across the lifespan including and far beyond attachment. The chapters detail how contemporary researchers and practitioners employ NSCM to understand both individual and socially constructed realities through storytelling and narrative. This comprehensive reference is the first to synthesize the diverse quantitative and qualitative studies using NSCM, assessing their current and potential value in social science research, integrating hundreds of multidisciplinary studies, and providing valuable insights and applications for researchers who study cognition and development across the lifespan. As this volume demonstrates, NSCM provide flexible and culturally sensitive tools for gaining insight into the human experience with great potential to inform pathways to positive psychological and social functioning and promote social justice and well-being in diverse contexts.
