The theory of functional systems developed by acad. P.K. Anokhin became the foundation of the systems approach to studying goal-directed behavior in humans and animals, serving as a “conceptual bridge” between the psychological and the physiological. This theory has been evolving for nearly 90 years within Anokhin’s scientific school, along several research lines. One of these is represented by the Laboratory of Psychophysiology named after V.B. Shvyrkov at the Institute of Psychology, Russian Academy of Sciences. Founded in 1972 by P.K. Anokhin and his student V.B. Shvyrkov, the laboratory was established to address fundamental problems of psychophysiology as a distinct subfield of psychology. Applying the theory of functional systems to psychophysiological research laid the groundwork for a new branch of psychology – systems psychophysiology. Rooted in a systems-evolutionary approach, this branch focuses on identifying the regularities in the formation and functioning of systems that constitute individual experience, their taxonomy, and the dynamics of intersystem relations in behavior.
