Direct archaeological traces of Bronze Age metalworkers are very limited, with most knowledge on their craft being based on indirect evidence coming from investigations of their products. Production techniques are a key feature to understanding who these craftspeople were. As technological choices reflect their habitus and depend on their socio-cultural background, spatial variations in them enable the identification of different production groups and the monitoring of their evolution across time. In this respect, techno-typology, a classification framework based purely on the variations observed at different steps of the chaîne opératoire, offers a proxy to access the identities of craftspeople that are otherwise invisible in the archaeological record.
