Abstract This chapter describes some of the complexity and change in women's lives, and proposes an approach to the study of socioeconomic and psychosocial pathways through the life course, as precursors of physical and mental health outcomes. The first section outlines what is known about women's socioeconomic life trajectories: the relationship between social origins and destinations, labour force participation, and their relationship to marriage and child rearing. The second section describes a theoretical and methodological approach to the analysis of the life course that takes account of social structure and changing individual characteristics over time.
