EnglishThis paper analyzes a group of deer representations in the rock art of Cueva Pintada, also known as La Pintada, in the Baja California Peninsula (Mexico). The site belongs to the Archaic Great Mural tradition, related with the hunter- gatherer-fisher groups that inhabited the peninsular central desert territory in the early archaic period. We first offer a morphological description of the deer motifs and, then, of the scenes they interact with, in an attempt to infer the role of this animal in the imagery of the Great Mural rock art. In the faunal representations of Cueva Pintada, fawns predominate in number but stags dominate the major scenes. As in most Great Mural sites, stags are placed in a prominent position, heading the compositions and in association with images of humans, mammals, birds and fish; comparable with symbols of earth, sky and water.
