EnglishCatherine of Alexandria, who lived in the 4th century, was a virgin and a martyr. In the 13th century Jacobus de Voragine wrote and compiled a biography about her, which is an excellent guide to understand medieval depictions. In the Middle Ages, Saint Catherine was represented either as a single figure with the wheel being the attribute most often represented, as part of a cycle alluding to her biography, where her philosophical confrontation with the emperor and her martyrdom were usually present, and, after the fourteenth century, the mystical union between her and the Child Jesus.
