Abstract

The author examines attitudes towards the protection, maintenance and restoration of monuments and sites in antiquity and from the middle ages onwards, with case-studies from italy, france, and the united kingdom. Concise english translation of two studies published originally in turkish: 1) tarihi vecre kaygisi (concern for the historic environment), 1971; 2) tarihi cevre bilinci (consciousness of the historic environment), 1975. Appendices: 1) extract from dictionnaire raisonne by eugene e.
