This paper provides an overview of urban sprawl and serves as an introduction to both the subject and this book. The complex causes and consequences of sprawl and uneven development are summarized. Overall the basic pattern of urban development since World War II has been one of outward expansion, with people, resources and wealth consistently shifting away from city centers. This expansion has been associated with various trajectories of inequality and uneven development. Although sprawl has brought benefits for at least some residents, the environmental and social costs have led many communities to implement a variety of smart growth proposals. In general, these proposals call for metropolitan or regional planning that makes more efficient use of existing resources and provides a more equitable distribution of the costs and benefits of uneven development.
