The First Lady/First Wife in Editorial Cartoons: Rhetorical Visions through Gendered Lenses

Abstract

Although first ladies have come under increased attention as participants in the political sphere, we argue that the rhetorical visions expressed in editorial cartoons demonstrate that first ladies are constrained by Bern's lenses of gender, suggesting that symbolic convergence over political wives does not parallel that of other political women.
