LA CIUDAD VISIBLE Y LA CIUDAD INVISIBLE: EL SURGIMIENTO DE LAS CASAS TOMADAS EN BUENOS AIRES

Abstract

This article is intent on analizing\nthe squatter phenomenon in the\ncity of Buenos Aires since the return\nof the democratic government\nin 1983. I intend to focus on the\nreasons why squatters -unlike\nother precarious city inhabitants,\nsuch as the slumdwellers- become\nignored by the government and are,\nat the same time, categorized on\nthe basis of an aggregate of illegal\nfactors. In fact, if this phenomenon\nhas been regarded as such in the\npast years, it was due to an increasingly\nrestrictive policy concerning\nthis phenomenon, which\nwas manifested not only in readily\nevicting strategies, but also in the\ndramatic lack of satisfactory housing\npolicies for the aforementioned\npopulation.
