It is generally recognized that data on female labour force participation in developing countries are often inaccurate or incomplete. The article discusses the difficulties involved in obtaining such data from the point of view of interviewers respondents and labour statisticians or economists. Suggestions are then made regarding alternative definitions of the labour force - paid market-oriented ILO extended each of which can provide planners with a different perspective on the labour force including womens status within it; further suggestions are made for improved labour force survey questionnaires. Finally preliminary results from a field study carried out among married rural women in India in 1981 are presented in order to illustrate the points made. (authors)
