Amongst the many scientific developments that have led to the modern practice of obstetrics and gynaecology, a relatively small number of original insights, discoveries and clinical observations stand out as having had an unique importance and seminal influence. They introduced the new concepts that made possible further key advances in scientific knowledge and patient care. This collection of papers contributes to a greater understanding of today's clinical practice by documenting those published papers that acted as the signposts for clinical progress. Accompanying each of these papers is a commentary that explains the special significance of the paper and the reasons for its impact on obstetrics and gynaecology. There is also a description of the scientists responsible, as well as a bibliography of other important papers that are a part of the story of discovery and development.
