Abstract

Transport technologies seldom make a comeback, save in nostalgia trips for well-heeled tourists. But there is a spectacular exception: railways, written off thirty years because of the steady growth of motor traffic, have suddenly become one of the basic technologies of the twenty-first century. The reason for this is the high-speed train. The article provides a general overview of the systems in operation presently.
