Agricultural buildings play an important role in the rural landscape. The older buildings, now considered an heritage, have become part of the residential and leisure functions of rural areas. For the farmers, these are often useless buildings, which one leaves in ruins, while functional buildings replace them. They answer to various needs, such as enlarging structures, specializing production, or answering to the evolution of health and environmental regulations. Their standardization is reflecting a break with the past. In order to answer to the social demand for landscape conservation, landscaping standards have increasingly been incorporated into the building process. Local authorities provide tools to improve the landscape integration of the buildings, aiming at « dressing them up » with new materials and new colors. Beyond administrative regulation, farmers are developing various strategies to better integrate the agricultural buildings into the landscape. These strategies are the product of the various ways farmers perceive and deal with agricultural multifunctionality.
