This book explores one of the most profound cultural changes to occur in British society since the 1950s--the impact of Jamaican popular music and culture on the indigenous population. Black culture, white explores the broader ramifications of sustained interaction between black and white Britons in both inner-city and suburban contexts. The book traces the historical progress of the reggae tradition, from its genesis in the Caribbean, through to its mass marketing and consumption in post-war white youth cultures. It evaluates some of the key shifts in cultural identity that have occurred as a result of these processes, and assesses the implications for the long-term politics of race in British society.
