A lexical atlas of the Hutsul dialects of the Ukrainian language

Abstract

Fixed in the Western mind through the cinematic masterpiece Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors, the Hutsul people of the Carpathian region live in the crossroads of numerous peoples. This atlas is the fruition of the late Polish linguist Jan Jano w's work. Janusz Rieger began work on Jano w's expedition material in the late 1970s and since then has succeeded in transferring the information from disparate field notes and other archival sources onto a series of more than 250 maps, with separate linguistic commentary and indices. This atlas provides a fundamental resource for Slavic dialectologists.
