Influence of the Audition Hour on Selection to an All-State Band

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine if the frequency that students were selected for all-state band in a mideastern state was independent of the time of day that they performed. The sample for this study included the 647 woodwind and brass students (grades 10 through 12) who participated in the final audition for the 1998 All-State Band. Chair placements were created by ranking the raw scores of each student in each instrument category. The time of audition for both selected and nonselected students was analyzed using a 2x8 chi square test of independence. On the basis of the information derived from tis study, it can be concluded that the selection of students for participation in the 1998 all-state band was associated with the time of day that the students auditioned 22% of the time. From 9:00 a.m. to 10:59 a.m., 54% of the students were selected to participate in the all-state band rather than the expected 32%. Conversely from 1:00 p.m. to 2:59 p.m., 14% of the students were selected to participate in the all-state band rather than the expected 27%.
