Abstract

It is from their reflection that there arises - as it often happens in Tabucchi's fiction - what turns something tangible, a place, a sound or an image into a fleeting and eminently painful space. Without anything, at the beginning or at the end of the path, truly corresponding to an object, where the saudade, whose slow rhythm spreads out, is a subject-free nostalgia: rather, a melancholy that has its effects on the present, confusing times and cleverly mingling rêves and revers. Just like it happens with images reflected in the mirror or with figures lying in the background of paintings (Bosch, Velazquez...) that foreshadow what is behind things, allowing for a special understanding between those few who are able to feel the ephemeral and to understand death and carry it within themselves. \nIn this book, by analysing novels, essays and short stories that deal with what seems to be on the other side of the fire that generates shadows in the platonic cave, we focus on a world of floating objects, ontologically blurred yet, precisely for this reason, incredibly real. Dysphoric objects and spaces - for non-existent and paradoxical characters that move between scribbled and unfinished stories - chase each other and intertwine in pages that are intended to reread with Leopardi, Hemingway, Beckett... the last testament of Tristan, and to interrogate, also on the basis of texts skilfully concealed by the writer, the 'third gender' to which the sinopias of life, the betrayals of history, the constructions of fantasy, allude. Where everything is a dream of a dream (or, rather, a hallucination), though with the paradoxical result of keeping closer to the soul that is found in the place of silence, of hoarse voices, of the night.
