Urban transport is shaped by physical structure, economic factors and cultural factors. This chapter focuses on how physical planning can change travel. Data are provided on how cities are structured so that there is no increase in travel times. Other factors become important only when the options for travel fit within the restrictions of the travel time budget. In order to provide policy options to reduce traffic, more sustainable transport options must be provided that can be competitive with the car in time. Data are provided to support this and also on the minimum densities in centers required to make viable sustainable transport options.
