In 1981 the Norwegian Petroleum Directorate issued Guidelines for Safety Evaluation of Platform Conceptual Design''. The objective was to give guidance for the safety evaluation of installations, expressing the NPD's general attitude to the problem areas and indicating how the safety aspects could be handled at an early stage of planning. The guidelines cover major accident control, where the installation safety is verified against major accidents, jeopardizing a large number of lives, causing severe pollution and/or major economic losses. The guidelines discuss specifically the extent of documentation, methods for performing the safety analysis, and criteria for acceptable safety. The guidelines are curr ently being revised in order to accommodate the experiences gained since 1981 and to match the new Norwegian Petroleum Law which will be introduced in 1985. .
