The Robert and Lisa Sainsbury Collection is owned by the University of East Anglia, Norwich, and is displayed there in the Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts. This catalogue of the collection is published in three volumes: 1. 19th and 20th Century Paintings, Drawings and Sculpture, 2. Pacific, African and Native North American Art, 3. Precolumbian, Asian, Egyptian and European Antiquities. The Sainsbury Collection has its origins in the 1930s, when Robert Sainsbury, having become a collector of private press books, began to acquire works by Epstein and Moore, and sculptures from China and Africa. After their marriage in 1937, Robert and Lisa Sainsbury embarked on what is described in the Foreword as, unplanned voyage of discovery in the world of art. This voyage led to the initial gift of the collection to the university in 1973, and to continuing acquisitions since that time which have enlarged the collection considerably. Covering a wide range which includes Moore, Giacometti and Bacon, Polynesia, Alaska and Western Africa, Mesoamerica, Japan and the Cycladese, this is now considered to be one of the greatest collections made in the 20th century, housed in one of the modern buildings, Norman Foster's Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts. Specialists from European, American and Japanese universities and museums have contributed entries for this catalogue, which provides a research resource for art historians, anth-ropologists and archeologists, as well as being an accessible introduction to a great range of art from many periods and cultures. Particular care has been taken with every aspect of production, in order to attempt a quality of design, type-setting, materials and printing which is the hallmark of the private press books which so attracted Robert Sainsbury in the 1920s.
