In the sphere of assignment models the dynamic process is the subject of increasing interest due to the need to explicitly simulate the day-to-day dynamic of a transportation system for a better evaluation of link flows and relative network performances, such as travel times, congestion and pollution. Most of the presented models refer to road assignment, while for transit assignment literature is not so extensive (Hickman and Wilson, 1995, Nuzzolo and Russo, 1998), especially congested networks. Within-day dynamic transit assignment allows the system configuration to be obtained in terms of flows and travel times for each run of each line and is recommended to be used for operational planning. These detailed results require different treatment in demand definition, for which we must also know the distribution of user origin departure times in supply modelling, which must represent time variations of system characteristics, and in defining specific time-dependent path choice models, based on specific hypotheses on user behaviour. In addition to the consideration of the day-to-day dynamics we have to define cost and choice update models. This paper is based on an extension of the within-day dynamic models proposed by Nuzzolo et al (1998) to congested networks and to the day-to-day dynamics. The model has also been applied to a real-size test network in order to show the effectiveness of the proposed approach. For the covering abstract see ITRD E105584.
