Beginning with the premise that culture is contradictory and socially mediated, this study considers various topics such as heresy, alchemy and utopia, civil war and medieval language theory, in the context of medieval texts such as Canterbury Tales and Troilus and Criseyde. Written from a Marxist perspective, the book challenges the liberal consensus of Anglo-American medieval literary study. It considers the literary text as social production, and its aim - using approaches as widely varied as those of Engels, Propp, Macherey and Iragaray - is to examine the production of social meaning by medieval authors and modern critics.
