Abstract

Written as a travelogue through 25 darghas, temples and shrines, from Kashmir to Kerela, this book explores what draws devotees from different communities to them in common worship. Blending legend, history, ethnography with critical insights, it reveals the deeply humanist vision of the sacred from the boundaries of caste, even as some of them have become embroiled in communal conflicts.
