The book deals with the effects of the research and technological development (RTD) policy of the European Community (EC) on the German research landscape and the interactions between the EC and the German research and technology policy. Although there had previously been several studies and evaluations of EC programmes, a systematic attempt at a cross-programme and country specific level has not been undertaken.. Viewed as a whole, the European Framework Programme promoted the exchange of ideas, technology and knowledge within the European Community and improved the scientific and technical basis. The German RTD policy has not lost its significance, but the EC policy has gained in significance. The book shows that expectations in Germany regarding EC policy have markedly increased. German actors accept that by now EC structures in research and technology have been functioning according to their own dynamics. This development is no longer reversible - the issue now is a responsible sha ping of the future structures.
